The glacier on the Italian side of the highest massif in Europe, Mont Blanc, could break due to climate change, scientists warned. Part of the glacier glides from the slope at a speed of 50 to 60 centimeters per day, and if broken, it would crush 250,000 cubic meters of ice down the slope. As a result, the Italian authorities prevented several mountain roads from being closed and evacuated mountain huts.
According to experts, about 250,000 cubic meters of ice could be broken off from the Planpincieux glacier on Mount Grandes Jorasses. Part of the glacier glides from the slope at a speed of 50 to 60 centimeters per day. Experts from regional authorities and the Fondazione Montagna Sicura Foundation say it is difficult to predict when the ice mass could break.
Courmayeur Mayor Stefano Miserocchi on Tuesday ordered the closure of two roads in the Val Ferret Valley on the Italian side of Mont Blanc, and preventively evacuated all mountain huts in the area. According to him, the glacier does not endanger nearby settlements or tourist accommodations.
“These phenomena again indicate that the mountain is changing significantly due to climatic factors and is therefore particularly vulnerable,” the mayor of Courmayeur told the Italian media.
Fondazione Montagna Sicura Glacier near the highest mountain in Europe, 4810 meters high Mont Blanc, has been exploring since 2013.
